On reducing and deflating subspaces of matrices
A multilinear approach based on Grassmann representatives and matrix compounds is presented for the identification of reducing pairs of subspaces that are common to two or more matrices. Similar methods are employed to characterize the deflating pairs of subspaces for a regular matrix pencil A+ sB, namely, pairs of subspaces (L,M) such that AL ⊆ M and BL ⊆ M.
متن کاملSubspaces of Matrices with Special Rank Properties
Let K be a field and let V be a vector space of finite dimension n over K. We investigate properties of a subspaceM of EndK(V ) of dimension n(n − r + 1) in which each non-zero element of M has rank at least r and show that such subspaces exist if K has a cyclic Galois extension of degree n. We also investigate the maximum dimension of a constant rank r subspace of EndK(V ) when K is finite.
متن کاملEla Invariant Neutral Subspaces for Hamiltonian Matrices
Hamiltonian matrices with respect to a nondegenerate skewsymmetric or skewhermitian indefinite inner product in finite dimensional real, complex, or quaternion vector spaces are studied. Subspaces that are simultaneously invariant for the matrices and neutral in the indefinite inner product are of special interest. The dimension of maximal (by inclusion) such subspaces is identified in terms of...
متن کاملFinding eigenvalues for matrices acting on subspaces
Consider the eigenvalue problem QAQ~x = λ~x, where A is an n×n matrix and Q is projection matrix onto a subspace S⊥ of dimension n−k. In this paper we construct a meromorphic function whose zeros correspond to the (generically) n−k nonzero eigenvalues of QAQ. The construction of this function requires only that we know A and a basis for S, the orthogonal complement of S⊥. The formulation of the...
متن کاملVandermonde Matrices, NP-Completeness, and Transversal Subspaces
Let K be an infinite field. We give polynomial time constructions of families of r-dimensional subspaces of Kn with the following transversality property: any linear subspace of Kn of dimension n− r is transversal to at least one element of the family. We also give a new NP-completeness proof for the following problem: given two integers n and m with n m and a n ×m matrix A with entries in Z, d...
